President Obama in Normandy/Le président Obama à Normandie

During this past Saturday, June 6th, 2009, U.S.President Barack Obama visited the beaches of Normandy France, with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and with the prime ministers of Canada and England. Why? To commemorate the date in history when hundreds of American, British, and Canadian soldiers were massacred on the shores of Normandy during the second world war. Barack Obama stated that we cannot forget what happened on the shores of Normandy.

At the Post Office/A la poste

This morning at the local Post Office, I began conversing with a local French man in French. During our conversation he asked me if I've ever heard of John Winslow Irving, a writer in the state of New Hampshire in the United States. Apparently, this French man has read two of John Irving's books titled, "The Hotel New Hampshire"(1981) and "The World According to Garp"(1978), which were translated into French. Consequently, when I later returned to the library, I googled "John Winslow Irving" on the internet and found lots of information about him, as a well-known novelist, etc.

Apparemment, ce Français a lu deux livres de John Irving intitulés, "The Hotel New Hampshire"(1981) and "The World According to Garp"(1978), qui ont été traduits en français.

The Mussulmans; Arabs/Les Musulmans; les Arabes

U.S.President Obama is now making agreements with the Mussulman/Arab community of the Middle East. Here at the University of Angers, several of my friends are Mussulman/Arab. They are very generous and friendly.

Mother's Day in France/La fête de mère en France

I discovered that Mother's Day is also celebrated here in France, but it falls on sunday, June 7th. In fact, the local grocery store is now selling lots of flowers and plants to profit from Mother's Day.

Gerard Depardieu/Gérard Depardieu

I recently saw a French film featuring the well-known actor, Gerard Depardieu. The film addressed racism against the Arab community in France, where Gerard Depardieu and his wife adopted an Arab boy in the film. The film was very moving.

It is very hot here/Il fait ici très chaud

Since the weekend, the weather in Angers has become very hot. In fact, my room on the fifth floor becomes so hot that it is difficult to sleep at night. The sun hits my window strongly toward the last part of the day. Moreover, this past Monday I suffered heat-stroke after traveling on the buses (without air-conditioning)and walking around downtown Angers in the heat.

Here at the Angers campus, I am amazed at the number of French students who smoke cigarettes during the day, especially in the courtyard between the library and the classroom building (Liberal Arts).

My return/Mon retour

Today I received confirmation of my trip home. It seems that I will arrive in Bangor, Maine the same day that I leave France, June 10th, 2009.

Yesterday I went downtown Angers for the religious holiday, Pentecost. Many stores were closed for the holiday, and it was challenging to navigate the city with the ongoing construction of the new tramway. Streets and pedestrian walkways are being torn apart in the construction process. There is also lots of dust in the air from all that. Consequently, it looks like a disaster downtown at this time.

Practice caution when traveling/Faites attention en voyageant

One of my classmates (from Georgia-the country) had everything stolen when she recently traveled to Spain. Apparently, as soon as she turned around to take a photograph, someone stole all of her luggage and belongings which included her passport, billfold and money, credit cards, laptop computer, not to mention all of her clothes.

A catastrophe/Une catastrophe

An Air-France airbus/plane disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean on the route from Brazil to Paris two days ago. The airline was scheduled to land at Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris, France. There were some 222 people on board. The military is now searching for remains, and seem to have isolated the area where the plane disappeared, in finding peices of metal. In the meantime, family members are meeting at Charles De Gaulle airport for emotional support, and are also consulting phychological services in dealing with the unexpected losses in their families.

At the outdoor market /Au marché

Today I met with my professor (Hervé Menou) and his wife at the outdoor market which takes place every saturday in the center of Angers. I was amazed at the number of vendors and the variety of foods and other products at the market (fish, meat, cheese, fruit, breads, pastries, vegetables, prepared recipes, clothes, shoes, rugs, etc.). I took many photographs since there was so much color there. Afterward, I walked to my professor's townhouse, also in the city center, where he and his family served me a delicious meal prepared from the fresh foods they just purchased at the market--fish, rice, strawberries, etc. Unfortunately, a pic-pocket stole my professor's purse at the market. Fortunately, he did not keep any important documents in his purse; only a small quantity of money for the market. At the market, a strange man was also asking me for money.

I will leave France on June 10th and will arrive in Bangor, Maine on June 11th, late at night. I will finish all of my classes and exams by June 8th. I am looking forward to reconnecting with my four bunnies and my gardens. It is time to plant my vegetable garden. I will continue my blog until I leave. In fact, today I will visit the farmers markets in the center of Angers with one of my professors and then I will lunch with he and his wife.

Another long weekend!/Un autre week-end long!

There is yet another holiday (Pentecost) in France next monday, which means that this weekend is a three day weekend. Therefore, the University and it's library will be closed during Sunday and Monday. I won't have access to the library or computers for two days!

A correction/Une correction

In my last post, an error was made with the French word "labellisation." I spelled it incorrectly as "labelilisation," because of an error that was made on the handout that the instructor gave us. Apparently she did not notice that an error was made in the headline of the handout.

The language continues to evolve/La langue continue à évoluer

In my French language/Fracophone class, I just learned two new words that were recently added to the French language: the noun for "labeling" and the verb for "to label." These two new words were created from the French noun for "label." There you have the evolution of the French language!

A coffee with a student from Quebec/Un café avec une Québécoise

This past weekend I went downtown Angers for a coffee and conversation with a Study Abroad Student from Chicoutimi, Québec. We found a very nice café where we talked for about an hour. However,I found it difficult to understand her because of her strong Quebec accent. In addition, she was pronouncing all of her "d's" like "z's." Because of my difficulty in understanding her, she often had to break into English. I am amazed at the differences between the two French dialects. Plus, today I gave another oral presentation in one of my French classes, on the subjet of the "joual" language of Québec. The class enjoyed Michel Tremblay's use of joual in his play, "Beautiful Sisters."

All over France the use of windmills is being employed as a form of sustainable development. In that case, there are hills covered with windmills, in trying to harness energy from the winds.

At the universities in France, the students address their professors as "Mr." or "Mrs."

I continue to notice the landscape around Angers. There is some vegetation like in Maine, but here there is also a lot of subtropical and tropical vegetation including a few palm trees. There are many trees and bushes that produce flowers, which caused my allergies to become worse this Spring. Moreover, ivy climbs freely around the trucks of many trees.
